Representing Team Lakay of Baguio City, Philippines, Gina “Conviction” Iniong, 29, aims to capture the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion title but she is willing to wait. On July 7, 2018, she will face a former world title challenger at “ONE: Battle for the Heavens” at the Guangzhou Tianhe Gymnasium in Guangzhou, China.
Iniong will compete against Istela Nunes, 25, of Brazil in the atomweight division at “ONE: Battle for the Heavens.” Currently reigning as ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion is Angela “Unstoppable” Lee, 21, of Singapore, who defeated Nunes at “ONE: Dynasty of Heroes” on May 26, 2017.
“ONE: Battle for the Heavens” marks the return of Nunes to the cage as she went on hiatus after losing to Lee. On the other hand, Iniong has yet to challenge the reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion.
“It would be an honor for me to compete for the world title in the near future,” the Baguio City native stated. “If I can beat a former world title challenger again, then I can move up in my career. In God’s time, I will be a champion.”
Iniong might place herself on the verge of a shot at the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Championship if she secures an impressive victory over Nunes at “ONE: Battle for the Heavens.” Their atomweight bout will be the fourth match of the evening.
While it is Iniong’s dream to become a champion, she is not in a hurry. She would rather take the long road to a championship crack than prematurely vie for the gold-plated strap.
“I don’t want to rush things,” the Team Lakay fighter said. “I have to keep training to keep my edge. I know I can be a world champion. I know that in my heart, so I have to work very hard to achieve that dream.”
Currently, Iniong holds a professional mixed martial arts record of 7 wins and 3 losses. She earned 3 of these 7 wins in ONE Championship.
“Every bout is a lesson,” Iniong noted. “We gain valuable knowledge every time we train and step into the battle. I’d rather take a step-by-step approach.”
Iniong remains optimistic that an intricately crafted world title will be wrapped around her waist someday. She believes that there is always a right moment.
“Every martial artist should have the sense of growth,” Iniong expressed. “This sport is consistently evolving, and every competitor should adapt to changes and improve their overall game. It’s either you adapt or you fail. I just learned my lesson.”
In Iniong’s most recent bout, which took place in the Philippines on April 20, 2018 at “ONE: Heroes of Honor,” she defeated Jenny “Lady GoGo” Huang, 27, of Taiwan. Watch their bout here:
