Fighting out of Brazil, two-time Muay Thai World Champion Istela Nunes, 25, made a successful ONE Championship debut on August 13, 2016 by defeating Mei “V.V.” Yamaguchi, 35, of Japan at “ONE: Heroes of the World.” On July 7, 2018, the Brazilian mixed martial artist will compete in the promotion for the third time at “ONE: Battle for the Heavens.”
Taking place at the Guangzhou Tianhe Gymnasium in Guangzhou, China, “ONE: Battle for the Heavens” will feature two female bouts. The first one will be an atomweight bout between Nunes and Gina “Conviction” Iniong, 29, of the Philippines.
On May 26, 2017, Nunes unsuccessfully challenged reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela “Unstoppable” Lee, 21, of Singapore at “ONE: Dynasty of Heroes.” After the loss, the Brazilian fighter went on hiatus.
Nunes was born in Pau dos Ferros, a small industrial and agricultural town in Brazil’s northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte. When she was just 5 years old, she began training in the Brazilian martial art of capoeira.
At the age of 10, Nunes switched to Muay Thai and eventually settled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As a professional Muay Thai fighter, she made a record of 52 wins and 4 losses and earned two world championships in Thailand.
Shortly after walking away from Muay Thai, Nunes picked up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. To earn another shot at ONE Women’s Atomweight World Championship, she has to win her third ONE Championship bout.
The second female bout at “ONE: Battle for the Heavens” is the main event of the vening. Yodcherry Sityodtong, 19, of Thailand and Kai Ting “Killer Bee” Chuang, 23, of Chinese Taipei will compete for the ONE Super Series Kickboxing Atomweight World Championship.
