Fighting out of Tianjin, China, “The Underdog” Li Kai Wen, 22, has been fighting in ONE Championship since 2014. His 10th bout in the promotion is scheduled on July 13, 2018 at “ONE: Pursuit of Power,” which will take place at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
At “ONE: Pursuit of Power,” Li will compete in the featherweight division against Emilio “The Honey Badger” Urrutia, 31, of Miami, Florida. Currently reigning as the ONE Featherweight World Champion is Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen, 29, of Australia and Vietnam, who is also the reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion.
The Tianjin native is coming out of a record-breaking win. On June 23, 2018, he knocked out Rodian “The Redeemer” Menchavez, 24, of Manila, Philippines at 0:10 of Round 1 at “ONE: Pinnacle of Power” at the Studio City Event Center in Macau, China.
It is the fastest knockout in the featherweight division of ONE Championship. After this feat, Li called out Nguyen.
To earn the title shot, Li has to outperform Urrutia at “ONE: Pursuit of Power.” Currently, the Chinese contender has a professional mixed martial arts record of 8 wins and 4 losses while his American opponent has 11 wins and 5 losses.
Li was introduced to martial arts by a friend, who had invited him to join a local gym called Tianjin Top Team in Tianjin. Within weeks, Li was surprising his teammates with his newfound striking skills.
After proving himself to be a prodigiously fast learner, Li would go on to compete in both mixed martial arts and submission grappling, rapidly establishing a reputation for himself as one of the most exciting prospects on the notoriously competitive Chinese scene. He burst onto the global stage in style, winning two bouts in a single night to win the ONE Featherweight Beijing Tournament in December 2014.
