Hailing from Osaka, Japan, Kota “Genjin” Shimoishi, 31, is a professional mixed martial artist with 21 wins and 5 losses. He aims to improve this as he joins ONE Championship.
Shimoishi’s ONE Championship debut will take place on July 13, 2018 at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at “ONE: Pursuit of Power.” He will compete against Ariel “Tarzan” Sexton, 36, of San Jose, Costa Rica in the lightweight division.
“ONE Championship returns to the Axiata Arena this 13 July for another blockbuster evening of world-class martial arts action,” ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced. “We have an amazing event planned for fans in Kuala Lumpur, as our ONE Championship athletes get ready to electrify the stadium with dazzling performances.”
“In the main event, Malaysia’s very own Agilan ‘Alligator’ Thani takes on Zebaztian ‘The Bandit’ Kadestam in a welterweight contest,” Sityodtong also announced. “Also, Jo Nattawut will face Yohann Fairtex Drai in a ONE Super Series Muay Thai contest.”
In Shimoishi’s most recent bout, which was at “Road FC 46,” he lost to Mansour “The Afro-Samurai” Barnaoui, 25, of Paris France via rear-naked choke submission. It ended the five-bout winning streak of the Japanese contender, who consecutively defeated Khuukhenkuu “Amaraa” Amartuvshin, 33, of Mongolia, Yuki Okano, 31, of Japan, Kimihiro Eto, 29, of Japan, “Crazy Dog” Dae Song Park, 25, of South Korea and Yincang Bao, 24, of China.
Shimoishi is known for his well-rounded striking and grappling skills as well as his ability to deliver victories using his craftiness. He will be the first Japanese fighter to face Sexton in a professional MMA bout.
Like Shimoishi, Sexton is also coming out of a loss. In the Costa Rican fighter’s most recent bout, which was at “ONE: Quest for Gold” on February 23, 2018, he lost to Ev “E.T.” Ting, 28, of New Zealand and Malaysia via split decision.
