Fighting out of San Jose, Costa Rica, Ariel “Tarzan” Sexton, 36, just earned his 12th victory as a professional mixed martial artist. It was also his fourth win in ONE Championship.
On July 13, 2018, ONE Championship returned to Malaysia for “ONE: Pursuit of Power” featuring 8 MMA matches and 3 striking bouts in ONE Super Series. The first bout on the main card was a lightweight MMA match between Sexton and Kota “Genjin” Shimoishi, 31, of Osaka, Japan.
Taking place at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, “ONE: Pursuit of Power” marked Shimoishi’s ONE Championship debut. For Sexton, it was his sixth outing in the promotion.
Referee Kemp Cheng put a stop to the lightweight bout between Shimoishi and Sexton at 0:44 of Round 3. The Costa Rican contender submitted his Japanese opponent via Americana.
By beating Shimoishi at “ONE: Pursuit of Power,” Sexton improved his professional MMA record to 12 wins and 4 losses. He is training under the tutelage of Daniel Gracie.
A two-time Costa Rican Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu National Champion, Sexton has established himself as one of the best Costa Rican MMA fighters today. He earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under the famed Renzo Gracie.
On the other hand, Shimoishi’s professional MMA record downgraded to 21 wins and 6 losses. He is training out of Shooto Gym Blows.
After “ONE: Pursuit of Power,” Shimoishi is now riding a two-bout losing streak. Before joining ONE Championship, the Japanese fighter lost to Mansour “The Afro-Samurai” Barnaoui, 25, of Paris France at “Road FC 46.”
The main event of “ONE: Pursuit of Power” was a welterweight bout between Thani and Zebaztian “The Bandit” Kadestam, 27, of Sweden. The Swedish contender knocked out the hometown hero in the third round.
The co-main event was a ONE Super Series Muay Thai featherweight contest between “Smokin” Jo Nattawut, 28, of Thailand and Yohann Fairtex Drai, 26, of France. The Thai contender knocked out his French opponent in the first round.
