The “Fight of Champions” boxing event of MP Productions took place at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 15, 2018. Four title bouts were on the card.
One of the belts at stake was the vacant International Boxing Federation Flyweight Championship. Moruti “Babyface” Mthalane, 35, of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and Muhammad “Falcon” Waseem, 30, of Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan competed for the title.
After 12 rounds, the championship bout between Mthalane and Waseem was left in the hands of the judges. Two of the judges scored it 114-113 while the third judge gave it 116-110.
In the end, referee Malik Waleed raised Mthlane’s hand as the new IBF Flyweight Champion. The South African boxer defeated his Pakistani opponent via unanimous decision.
By defeating Waseem at “Fight of Champions,” Mthalane improved his professional boxing record to 35 wins and 2 losses. On the other hand, Mthalane’s record downgraded to 8 wins and 1 loss.
This made Mthalane the first boxer to defeat Waseem in a professional bout. Had Waseem won, he would have been the first ever Pakistani world boxing champion.
“Fight of Champions” marked the 12th time Mthlane won a bout via decision. Out of the 35 wins of the new IBF Flyweight Champion, 24 were via knockout.
In the main event of “Fight of Champions,” Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao, 39, of General Santos, South Cotabato, Philippines challenged reigning World Boxing Association (Regular) Welterweight Champion Lucas “La Maquina” Matthysse, 35, of Trelew, Chubut, Argentina.
