Shinya Aoki’s grappling vs Shannon Wiratchai’s One Shin Striking System in Manila

On July 27, 2018, Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki, 35, of Japan will face Shannon “OneShin” Wiratchai, 29, of Thailand at “ONE: Reign of Kings” in the Philippines. It will be a lightweight battle between a grappling master and the creator of One Shin Striking System.

Aoki is one of the three Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu superfighters competing at “ONE: Reign of Kings,” which will take place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila. The other two are Renzo Gracie, 51, of Brazil and Garry “The Lion Killer” Tonon, 26, of the United States.

When it comes to Aoki’s fighting skills, his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expertise is the first thing that comes to mind. Once he has opponents on the mat or grabs a hold of an opponent’s limbs, it is extremely difficult to escape and survival is highly unlikely.

Before joining ONE Championship, Aoki was already an iconic figure in mixed martial arts. He is best known for his ground game, which had already won him titles at World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA), DREAM and Shooto.

With a sensational number of 25 submissions out of 40 total victories, Aoki is widely considered one of the greatest pure grapplers in MMA. He has defeated some of the biggest names in the world, including Tatsuya Kawajiri, Caol Uno and Eddie Alvarez.

Wiratchai also knows a thing or two in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. OneShin Striking System, the fighting style he developed, incorporates various elements from Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Currently, Wiratchai has 9 wins, 2 losses and 1 No Contest. He is training out of Tiger Muay Thai and Bangkok Fight Lab.

Both Aoki and Wiratchai are coming out of a redemptive win. After losing to Rasul Yakhyaev, 27, of Russia at “ONE: Warriors of the World” on December 9, 2017 at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand, Wiratchai defeated Singapore-based Indian fighter Rahul “The Kerala Krusher” Raju, 26.

All of Aoki’s three most recent bouts took place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. After losing to Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 34, of the Philippines at “ONE: Defending Honor” on November 11, 2016 and to Ben “Funky” Askren, 33, of the United States at “ONE: Immortal Pursuit” on November 24, 2017, Aoki defeated Yakhyaev at “ONE: Unstoppable Dreams” on May 18, 2018.

Tonon and Aoki previously competed in ONE Championship. Here is a clip from the bout:
