China’s Zhang Weili earns 1st UFC win

Fighting out of Hebei, China, “Magnum” Zhang Weili, 28, successfully made her debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship on August 4, 2018 at “UFC 227.” She competed in the women’s strawweight division against Danielle “Dynamite” Taylor, 28, of Palmdale, California, United States.

The strawweight bout between Zhang and Taylor at “UFC 227” was the second bout on the early preliminary card. After three five-minute rounds, it was left in the hands of the judges.

In the end, Zhang had her hand raised by referee Blake Grice as the winner via unanimous decision with all the judges scoring it 29-28 in her favor. It was the 17th victory of the Chinese UFC debutante as a professional mixed martial artist.

By defeating Taylor at “UFC 227,” Zhang improved her professional MMA record to 17 wins and 1 loss. On the other hand, the record of the contender from Palmdale downgraded to 9 wins and 4 losses.

Zhang is now riding a 17-bout winning streak. The Heibi native had her first loss when she made her professional MMA debut at “China MMA League” on November 9, 2013.

At “China MMA League,” Zhang faced her fellow Chinese fighter Bo Meng. After two five-minute rounds, the latter was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Before joining the UFC, Zhang exhibited her fighting skills in Kunlun Fight MMA. In her recent fights in the Chinese promotion, she defeated Marilia “Chocolate” Santos, 25, of Sao Felix, Bahia, Brazil and Bianca Sattelmayer, 22, of Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

While “UFC 227” marked Zhang’s UFC debut, it was Taylor’s fifth bout in the promotion. The Chinese fighter is the third opponent to defeat the American contender in the promotion.

When Taylor made her UFC debut at “UFC Fight Night 92” on August 6, 2016, she lost to Maryna “The Iron Lady” Moroz, 26, of Dnipro, Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine via split decision. Aside from Zhang and Moroz, J.J. Aldrich, 26, of Westminster, Colorado, USA also defeated Taylor in the promotion.

Taylor now has 2 wins and 3 losses in the UFC. The two opponents she defeated in the promotion were Seo Hee Ham, 31, of Busan, South Korea and Jessica Penne, 35, of Huntington Beach, California, USA.
