Hailing from Iztacalco, Mexico City, Mexico, Juan “Dinamita” Manuel Marquez, 44, is returning to the boxing scene but not as a contender. The retired professional boxer will serve as the adviser of a fellow Mexican in an event in Bangkok, Thailand.
A four-division world champion, Marquez will use his boxing expertise to help Iran “MagnifiKO” Diaz, 22, of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico win at “ONE: Kingdom of Heroes.” The latter is set to challenge reigning World Boxing Council Super Flyweight World Champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, 31, of Thailand.
“ONE: Kingdom of Heroes” will take place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok on October 6, 2018. In the main event, Diaz and Sor Rungvisai will battle it out in the inaugural boxing match of ONE Championship.
Diaz acknowledges the advantage of Sor Rungvisai, who will compete in his home country. Still, the Mexican boxer believes in his skills and talent and promises to score a huge upset at “ONE: Kingdom of Heroes.”
With Marquez as the adviser, Ernesto Salgado will serve as Diaz’s trainer and coach. Salgado said, “We consider this to be a great opportunity for Iran to face one of the best super flyweights in the world today.”
“It’s his first world title fight,” Salgado added. “With Juan Manuel Marquez extending his helping hand, it’s huge for us.”
With a professional boxing record of 14 wins, 2 losses and 3 draws, Diaz is considered one of the fastest rising talents in Mexican boxing and is riding a five-bout winning streak. On the other hand, Sor Rungvisai has 46 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw and in his most recent bout, he defeated his Mexican opponent Juan Francisco Estrada, 28.
“There is so much at stake in this fight,” Salgado said. “We will need all the help we can get to win.”
Meanwhile, Marquez competed from 1993 to 2014. He had 56 wins, 7 losses and 1 draw.
Among Marquez’s high-profile opponents were his compatriot Marco Antonio “El Barreta” Barrera, 44, Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao, 39, of the Philippines and Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr., 41, of the United States. Watch the amazing knockouts by the retired Mexican boxer here:
