14 August 2018 – Manila, Philippines: Team Lakay veteran and former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario is scheduled to see action in the co-main event of “ONE: Beyond the Horizon” opposite Singapore’s Amir Khan. The two will lock horns in a three-round lightweight contest on September 8, 20018 at the Baoshan Arena in Shanghai, China.
“Amir is a young and hungry lion and he will be a very difficult opponent,” Banario acknowledged. “I am prepared to go the distance with him, but I will be looking for every opportunity to finish the bout early.”
Banario said he is also hungry and he is in the best shape of his life. He noted, “I feel very strong and I believe I can handle any opponent.”
For Banario, the “ONE: Beyond the Horizon” bout is very important and he has to show that he is right to be considered among the best in the lightweight division of ONE Championship. Currently reigning as ONE Lightweight World Champion is Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen of Australia and Vietnam, who is also the reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion.
“Amir Khan is a strong, young fighter,” Banario stated. “He’s very technical especially when it comes to striking. He uses his height and distance very well.”
Khan is a former Singaporean Muay Thai champion who moved to the United States to attend high school in Louisiana, where he began cross-training in wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu under BJJ black belt Relson Gracie. In 2014, Khan returned to Singapore, became part of Evolve MMA’s competition team and joined ONE Championship and has since accumulated several highlight-reel finishes, highlighting his immense talent and growing skills.
“It’s going to be a tough challenge for me that’s why I’m preparing very hard,” Banario said of his upcoming fight with Khan. “I expect a very good contest and my hand raised in victory.”
Both Khan and Banario are coming out of a victory. The Singaporean fighter holds a professional mixed martial arts record of 10 wins and 3 losses while the Team Lakay warrior has 13 wins and 6 losses.
“I just want to beat whoever they put in front of me,” the Team Lakay fighter said. “If that leads to another shot at the world title, then I’m okay with it. As a martial artist, I just want to work on my skills and test myself against the best.”
In his Khan’s most recent bout, he stopped South Korean Sung Jong Lee with punches in the second round. The Singaporean fighter aims to prolong his winning streak as he faces Banario, who is originally from a small farming town in Benguet in the mountainous region of the Philippines.
“Right now I’m working hard, despite the heavy rain and the cold,” Banario shared. “I’m in the gym training. I’m on the road running.”
The main event of “ONE: Beyond the Horizon” features ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan of China who will defend her title against promotional newcomer Samara Santos of Brazil. Meanwhile, here is a clip featuring Khan:
