Still reigning as the ONE Featherweight and Lightweight World Champion, Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen, 29, of Australia and Vietnam has decided to bid goodbye to the bantamweight division. Now, he shifts his focus to the possible threats to both his featherweight and lightweight thrones.
There is a plethora of challengers that are ready and willing to dethrone Nguyen from both divisions. For the featherweight division, he sees former ONE Featherweight World Champion Narantungalag “Tungaa” Jadambaa, 42, of Mongolia as a viable challenger to his title.
“If that is the next one for me, then I want Jadambaa,” Nguyen stated. “He is the ex-king, he is a legend, and he has been in this sport forever.”
It would be hard to argue with Nguyen, given that Jadambaa won four of his last five matches. He is coming off back-to-back victories with a unanimous decision win against Kazuki Tokudome, 31, of Japan and a second-round technical knockout win over Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly, 34, of the Philippine.
Another intriguing direction for Nguyen would be a grudge match against former ONE Featherweight World Champion Marat “The Cobra” Gafurov, 33, of Russia. In their rematch, Nguyen became the new ONE Featherweight World Champion by knocking out Gafurov.
Currently, Nguyen and Gafurov have split their first two meetings and a trilogy bout is something that the reigning champion believes is inevitable down the road. After the rematch loss, Gafurov had one victory, which was a first-round submission win over Emilio “The Honey Badger” Urrutia, 31, of the United States.
“As for Marat, I had to wait two years and finish four guys consecutively to get my rematch with him, and he has only had one fight since the loss, and that is against Emilio [Urrutia],” Nguyen said. “He beat him in the first round, so good on him. It was a good finish, but I would like to see him fight two more times, at least.”
As the reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion, Nguyen has one successful title defense. On May 18, 2018, he defeated Christian “The Warrior” Lee, 20, of Singapore via split decision.
