Samara “Marituba” Santos, 25, of Marituba, Para, Brazil was given the rare opportunity to challenge a world champion in her ONE Championship debut and she will not let it go to waste. The Brazilian mixed martial artist is scheduled to challenge reigning ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan, 30, of Beijing, China at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai, China on September 8, 2018.
“Xiong is a great fighter and a great champion,” Santos stated. “But she is the one that is standing between me and my dreams, and in Shanghai, I will do whatever it takes for me to reach my dream of becoming a ONE World Champion.”
The ONE Championship debutante now has an opportunity to showcase her skills on the biggest martial arts promotion in the world. She hopes to be able to find success at this level so as to be able to use the sport as a means to give back to her family.
“I think that I can be successful and achieve many dreams through sport,” Santos quipped. Winning at “ONE: Beyond the Horizon” will be the most significant of her career as it will definitely open even more avenues for her.
If Santos defies the odds and emerges victorious at “ONE: Beyond the Horizon,” she will not only put herself on top of the ONE Championship women’s 56.7-kilogram division. She will also set herself up for a champion-versus-champion match against one of the best female mixed martial artists in the world in reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela “Unstoppable” Lee, 22, of Singapore at “ONE: Heart of the Lion” in Singapore on November 9, 2018.
Before thinking of the future, Santos needs to deal with the present in the form of Xiong. The Marituba native holds a professional MMA record of 12 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw, which she aims to improve by winning at “ONE: Beyond the Horizon.”
