One of the contestants of the 37th season of “Survivor” is mixed martial artist Bi “KillHer Bee” Nguyen, 28, of Houston, Texas. This makes the daughter of Vietnamese refugees the first MMA fighter to compete in the CBS reality series.
Nguyen was eight years old when she, her parents and seven siblings immigrated from Vietnam to the United States. The family then settled in Oakland, California.
When Nguyen was 15, she moved to Houston, Texas. It was at a local gym called 4oz Fight Club where she started to train kickboxing and Muay Thai.
On July 12, 2014, Nguyen made her MMA debut at “USACA- Legacy Amateur Series 16” where she knocked out Ashley Milligan, 24, of Texas. As an amateur MMA fighter, the Vietnamese-American athlete who competes in the atomweight division had 4 wins and 1 loss.
On July 1, 2016, Nguyen made her professional MMA debut. As a professional fighter, she has 4 wins and 3 losses.
The last time Nguyen won in the cage was on February 17, 2018 when she defeated Cassie “The Hulk” Robb, 28, of Casper, Wyoming at “KOTC: Prevail” via split decision. One week before the win, the Vietnamese-American atomweight fighter’s father died of liver cancer.
“His loss really reminded me of why I fight,” Nguyen told ESPN. “I did it in honor of him.”
The casting director of “Survivor” called Nguyen on the same day her father passed away. She told MMA Junkie that she had mixed emotions at the time and it was “hard to process.”
“But thinking about my dad, it was like, ‘Dad would say, Yes,’ so it just fell in my lap,” Nguyen told the publication. “It was really, really meant to be.”
Filmed in Mamanuca Islands, Fiji from March 29, 2018 to May 6, 2018, “Survivor” Season 37 features 20 castaways, who are divided into two teams. Team David has 10 underdogs including Nguyen while Team Goliath has 10 topdogs.
Hosted by Jeff Probst, the new season of the reality series titled “Survivor: David vs Goliath” will premiere on CBS on September 26, 2018. Get to know Nguyen and her fellow castaways here:
