Hailing from Albay, Philippines, Ramon “The Bicolano” Gonzales, 31, is one of the two Filipino athletes on the “ONE: Kingdom of Heroes” card. He is scheduled to face Dodi “The Maung” Mardian, 34, of Indonesia.
Featuring 6 mixed martial arts matches, 7 ONE Super Series striking-only contests and 1 boxing bout, “ONE: Kingdom of Heroes” will take place on October 6, 2018 at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. In the first bout of the evening, Gonzales and Mardian will battle it out in an MMA match in the flyweight division.
For Gonzales, there is nothing quite like being able to represent the Philippines in the biggest martial arts organization in the world. He said, “I can honestly say that nothing compares to carrying the Philippine flag in international competition.”
“This is something that will always give me great pride,” the Albay native added. “It is definitely an honor.”
Four of the reigning world champions of ONE Championship are from the Philippines. For Gonzales, seeing his compatriots succeed in the promotion is definitely a source of motivation and inspiration.
“I’m happy to see my fellow Filipinos go far in this sport and in ONE Championship,” Gonzales stated. “It gives me the confidence to believe in myself and also aspire for the same level of success. It is definitely inspiring to see them succeed.”
Joining Gonzales as the Filipino representatives at “ONE: Kingdom of Heroes” is Robin “The Ilonggo” Catalan, 27, of Iloilo, Philippines. In the sixth bout of the evening, the latter will face Hayato Suzuki, 32, of Misato, Saitama, Japan in an MMA bout in the flyweight division.
Currently reigning as ONE Flyweight World Champion is Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio, 29, of Baguio City, Philippines. Here is an interview with him months before he became a champion:
