Lao-American UFC fighter Andre Soukhamthath beats Jonathan Martinez at ‘UFC Fight Night 138’

Fighting out of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, United States, Andre “The Asian Sensation” Soukhamthath, 30, recently improved his professional mixed martial arts record to 13 wins and 6 losses. The Lao-American MMA fighter defeated Jonathan “Dragon” Martinez, 24, of Plainview, Texas, United States at “UFC Fight Night 138” on October 27, 2018.

Featuring 13 MMA bouts, “UFC Fight Night 138” took place at the Avenir Centre in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. In the 10th bout of the evening, Soukhamthath and Martinez competed in the bantamweight division.

After three five-minute rounds, the bantamweight bout between Soukhamthath and Martinez was left in the hands of the judges. In the end, referee Jerin Valel raised the hand of the Lao-American contender, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Losing to Soukhamthath downgraded Martinez’s record to 9 wins and 2 losses. It was the Texan fighter’s UFC debut.

“UFC Fight Night 138” marked Soukhamthath’s fifth UFC bout. He now has 2 wins and 3 losses in the promotion.

Soukhamthath is the first ever Lao-American MMA fighter signed to the UFC. He was born to in Providence, Rhode Island to Lao immigrants William Soukhamthath and Chanthalangsy Soukhamthath.

During the Vietnam War, William fled to Thailand. He took up Muay Lao boxing in a refugee camp.

Chanthalangsy was adopted by an American family when she was a child. She moved with her foster parents to the United States.

When Andre was young, he played soccer and dreamed of becoming a professional goalkeeper. It was in 2009 when he started training in MMA.

When Andre made his UFC debut at “UFC 209” on March 4, 2017, he lost to Albert “The Warrior” Morales, 27, of Reseda, California, United States via split decision. The Lao-American fighter returned to the UFC cage on August 5, 2017 at “UFC Fight Night 114” and lost to Alejandro “Turbo” Perez, 29, of San Jose, California again via split decision.

On December 9, 2017, Andre had his first victory in the UFC. He knocked out Luke Anders, 32, of Clarksville, Tennessee, United States via punches at “UFC Fight Night 123.”

On March 3, 2018, Andre faced his third loss in the UFC. He lost to Sean “Sugar” O’Malley, 24, of Glendale, Arizona, United States via unanimous decision at “UFC 222.”
