Filipino-American boxer Nonito Donaire sends Ryan Burnett prayers of healing

On November 3, 2018, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, 35, captured the World Boxing Association Super World Bantamweight title by defeating Ryan Burnett, 26. On the same day, the former took to Twitter to wish the latter well.

Born in Talibon, Bohol, Philippines, Donaire is currently residing in San Leandro, California, United States. Among those who supported him in his recent bout was his fellow Filipino-American Allan “apl.de.ap” Pineda Lindo, 43, a member of the hip hop group The Black Eyed Peas.

Burnett was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. As the defending champion, he defended the WBA Super World Bantamweight title against Donaire at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, U.K.

At 0:01 of Round 5, Burnett was forced to retire due to a back injury. The victory qualified Donaire to the semifinals of the World Boxing Super Series.

It was the first defeat of Burnett as a professional boxer. Losing to Donaire downgraded the record of the Belfast native to 19 wins and 1 loss.

On the other hand, the victory improved Donaire’s professional boxing record to 39 wins and 5 losses. For the San Leandro resident, it was a bittersweet victory.

“No, it’s a victory, I just felt bad for him,” Donaire told ESPN referring to Burnett. “But we worked really hard for this fight. We’re celebrating this victory, but again, I feel bad for him. That’s pretty much it.”

In the same event at the SSE Hydro, Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor, 27, of Prestonpans, Scotland, U.K. successfully defended his World Boxing Council Silver Super Lightweight title by knocking out Ryan “Blue Chip” Martin, 25, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, U.S.A. in the seventh round. The former will face Ivan Barancchyk in the WBSS semifinals.

Also in the WBSS semifinals, Donaire will challenge reigning World Boxing Organization World Bantamweight Champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete, 30, of Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, South Africa.  On October 13, 2018, the South African boxing champ successfully defended his WBO title from Mikhail Aloyan, 30, of Novosibirsk, Russia via unanimous decision.
