Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio, 29, of the Philippines lost to Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes, 29, of Brazil via unanimous decision during their trilogy fight. Two of the three judges are Filipinos.

Training out of Team Lakay in Baguio City, Philippines, Eustaquio lost the ONE Flyweight World Championship title to Moraes in the main event of “ONE: Hero’s Ascent” on January 25, 2019 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. The result earned the ire of many Filipino fight fans.

The judges who scored the five five-minute rounds of mixed martial arts bout between Eustaquio and Moraes at “ONE: Hero’s Ascent” were Ian Cartwright, Joey Lepiten and Rosenberg Rosete. Cartwright is a Thailand-based Canadian while Lepiten and Rosete are both Filipinos.

“Regarding the decision, they’re pointing out that I got stuck far too long in a leg lock,” Eustaquio stated. “In my opinion, of course, I have to study the fight again and learn but it is what it is. What hurts more is that there were two Filipino judges but I have to stay positive and I respect the judges’ decision at the end of the day.”

Eustaquio noted that Moraes’s bread and butter is his jiu-jitsu. The Team Lakay fighter admitted that there were times when he got careless at “ONE: Hero’s Ascent” because he was not able to defend a few takedowns from his Brazilian challenger.

“But if you saw the fight, I was the one to score even when he’s in the mount position,” Eustaquio said. “I throw punches, elbow strikes. My elbow was even in pain from hitting him in the head.”

For Eustaquio, he would have to thoroughly watch the contest again to come up with an objective assessment. He lost to Eustaquio during their first encounter but had his redemptive win during their rematch.

“I’ve been through this before,” the Team Lakay fighter said. “It’s time to get back to the drawing board. It hurts to smile but we are people of the mountains and there is no mountain we cannot conquer.”
