For the first time, Ringstar Asia of Scott Patrick Farrell and MP Promotions of Manny Pacquiao co-promoted a boxing event along with Sanman Promotions of Jim Claude Manangquil. The weigh-ins for the event titled “Rising Stars” took place at Resorts World Manila in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on March 22, 2019 and the fight night was held at the same venue the next day.
“Rising Stars” featured 11 boxing bouts. The second match was between Filipino boxers Jayson Brillo, 17, and Joel Cago, 23.
The event marked Cago’s professional boxing debut. Representing Elorde Fight Camp, he is trained by Roy Albaera and managed by Kiven Lipana.
Brillo made his professional boxing debut on November 14, 2018. Representing MP Boxing Gym, he is trained and managed by Raides Neri.
Brillo and Cago’s bout was set in four three-minute rounds. They competed in the junior bantamweight division with Jerrold Tomeldan as the referee.
After four three-minute rounds, the bout was left in the hands of the judges. Sammy Bernabe scored it 39-37 while Ferdinand Estrella and Danilo Lopez scored it 42-36.
In the co-main event, Filipino boxers Rene Mark Cuarto, 22, and Samuel “Silent Assassin” Salva, 21, competed in an International Boxing Federation Minimumweight title eliminator. Cuarto won via unanimous decision.
In the main event, Filipino boxers Kenny “Big Heart” Demecillo, 26, and Michael “Gloves on Fire” Dasmarinas, 26, and competed in an IBF Bantamweight Championship title eliminator. Dasmarinas won via unanimous decision.
Pacquiao graced the event with his wife Jinkee Pacquiao, 40, and their children. They were also with NBA coach Metta World Peace, 39, who was previously known as Ron Artest.
