[PHOTOS] Kazakhstan vs Australia: Kairat Akhtemov, Reece McLaren fight at ‘ONE: A New Era’ in Tokyo, Japan

Kazakhstan and Australia were among the 19 countries represented at “ONE: A New Era” at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan on March 31, 2019. It was the first ever ONE Championship event to take place in the country.

“ONE: A New Era” featured 11 mixed martial arts bouts and four ONE Super Series matches, which include two kickboxing contests and two Muay Thai contests. In the seventh bout of the evening, Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov, 31, of Kazakhstan faced Reece “Lightning” McLaren, 27, of Australia.

Blue Corner

McLaren holds a professional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu record to 170 wins and 22 losses.

Red Corner

Akhmetov holds a professional Greco-Roman wrestling record of 200 wins and 25 losses.

Fight Result

Akhtemov and McLaren competed in the quarter-finals of ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix. Olivier Coste served as the referee.

After three five-minute rounds, the flyweight bout was left in the hands of the judges. In the end, Coste raised the hand of Akhmetov, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Winning at “ONE: A New Era” improved Akhmetov’s professional MMA record to 26 wins and 2 losses. On the other hand, McLaren now has 12 wins and 6 losses.

“ONE: A New Era” Main Event 

In the main event, Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki, 35, of Japan challenged reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 35, of the Philippines in a rematch.
