[PHOTOS] Philippines vs Korea: Eric Kelly, Kwon Won Il fight at ‘ONE: Roots of Honor’ in the Philippines

The Philippines and South Korea were among the 18 countries represented at “ONE: Roots of Honor.” It was the second ONE Championship event in 2019 held in the Philippines.

Featuring two kickboxing contests, two Muay Thai bouts and 11 mixed martial arts matches, “ONE: Roots of Honor” took place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on April 12, 2019. In the sixth bout of the evening, Eric “The Natural” Kelly, 36, of Baguio City, Philippines faced “Pretty Boy” Kwon Won Il, 23, of Seoul, South Korea.

Kwon is training out of Extreme Combat and Top Gym BF. “ONE: Roots of Honor” marked his third ONE Championship bout.

When Kwon made his ONE Championship debut at “ONE: Eternal Glory” at Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia on January 19, 2019, he knocked out Anthony “The Archangel” Engelen, 33, of Indonesia and the Netherlands. On February 22, 2019, the Seoul native was submitted by Masakazu “Ashikan Judan” Imanari, 43, of Japan at “ONE: Call to Greatness” at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.

Kelly started his wushu training when he was 19 years old. He represented the Philippines at the Southeast Asian Games and won gold in the sport.

As an MMA fighter, Kelly has been competing professionally since 2009. “ONE: Roots of Honor” marked his 12th bout in ONE Championship.

Fight Result

Kelly and Kwon competed in an MMA match in the featherweight division. Kemp Cheng served as the referee.

Cheng put a stop to the featherweight contest after 19 seconds in the first round when Kwon knocked out Kelly. This is the second fastest stoppage victory in ONE Championship’s featherweight division.

Winning at “ONE: Roots of Honor” improved Kwon’s professional MMA record to 9 wins and 1 loss. On the other hand, Kelly now has 12 wins and 7 losses.

“ONE: Roots of Honor” Main Events

In the co-main event, Joshua “The Passion” Pacio, 23, of the Philippines challenged reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Yosuke “The Ninja” Saruta, 31, of Japan in a rematch. The Filipino challenger knocked out the Japanese defending champion in the fourth round.

In the main event, reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen, 29, of Australia and Vietnam defended his belt against former champion Narantungalag “Tungaa” Jadambaa, 43, of Mongolia. The Vietnamese-Australian defending champion knocked out the Mongolian challenger in the second round.

Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, China, Cuba, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the United States were also represented at “ONE: Roots of Honor.” Check the complete results on Conan Daily.
