[PHOTOS] Philippines vs Japan: Mark Striegl, Shunichi Shimizu fight at ‘URCC Global: Raw Fury’ at Cove Manila, Parañaque City

The Philippines and Japan were among the six countries represented at “URCC Global: Raw Fury.” Hosted by Boyet Sison, it was the first event of the Philippines-based mixed martial arts promotion URCC Global in 2019.

Featuring 10 MMA matches, “URCC Global: Raw Fury” took place at The Cove at Okada Manila in Parañaque City, Metro Manila, Philippines on April 27, 2019. In the co-main event of the evening, Shunichi “Rolling Star” Shimizu, 34, of Kuchinoerabu, Japan challenged reigning URCC Global Featherweight Champion Mark “Mugen” Striegl, 30, of Baguio City, Philippines.

While Striegl was one the 17 hometown heroes who competed at “URCC Global: Raw Fury,” Shimizu solely represented Japan. China, South Korea, Switzerland and the United States were also represented.

Blue Corner

Shimizu has been competing professionally since 2005. He made his URCC Global debut at “URCC Global: Raw Fury.”

Born on January 31, 1985, Shimizu is a former UFC athlete. He is training out of Uruno Dojo in Tokyo, Japan.

Red Corner

Competing professionally since 2009, Striegl captured the URCC Global Featherweight Championship belt in 2018. “URCC Global: Raw Fury” marked his sixth URCC Global bout and on his corner were George Castro, AJ “Pyro”Lias Mansor and Jerry Legaspi.

Striegl is training out of Alliance Gym Philippines in Quezon City, Metro Manila. He was born in Tokyo on June 23, 1988 to a German-American father and a Filipino mother.

Fight Result

The match between Striegl and Shimizu was one of the five title bouts at “URCC Global: Raw Fury.” Joey Lepiten served as the referee.

After 2 minutes and 6 seconds, Shimizu asked for a time-out when he received an accidental knee to the groin from Striegl. The Japanese challenger was given 5 minutes to recover.

Shimizu decided not to continue after the 5-minute recovery time. In the end, the match was declared a No Contest so Striegl is still the reigning URCC Global Featherweight World Champion.

After “URCC Global: Raw Fury,” Striegl’s professional record is 18 wins, 2 losses and 1 No Contest. Shimizu now has 32 wins, 22 losses, 11 draws and 1 No Contest.

“URCC Global: Raw Fury” Main Event

Musa Conteh, 32, of Atlanta, Georgia, United States challenged two-division champion Chris Hofmann, 29, of the Philippines and Switzerland for the URCC Global Middleweight Championship title in the main event. The Filipino-Swiss defending champion knocked out his American challenger.
