The Jr. NBA Global Championship Asia Pacific Selection Camp will take place at the Universitas Pelita Harapan in Jakarta, Indonesia on June 15-16, 2019, the National Basketball Association announced on May 31, 2019. The camp will feature 34 boys and 34 girls from Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

The 64 participants will compete for the opportunity to represent the region in the Jr. NBA Global Championship, a youth basketball tournament for the top 13- and 14-year-old boys and girls teams from around the world. It will be held on August 6-11, 2019 at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Florida, United States.

In addition to five-on-five competition, Jr. NBA Global Championship Asia Pacific Selection Camp will focus on technical and tactical skills development. It will culminate with the selection of 10 boys and 10 girls who will represent Asia Pacific at the Jr. NBA Global Championship in August 2019.

Aside from improving youth health and wellness, the Jr. NBA program in Asia also aims to address growing inactivity by integrating basketball into the local physical education curriculum. Since its launch in 2014, the program has reached more than 18 million boys and girls across Asia, teaching the fundamentals of basketball and the program’s core values of sportsmanship, teamwork, a positive attitude and respect (S.T.A.R.).

Throughout Asia, the Jr. NBA Coaches Academy has trained more than 62,000 teachers from 37,000 schools across 50 cities. It is the program’s government-supported train-the-trainers initiative which aims to further local development by establishing standards for how the sport should be coached and enjoyed.

Both boys and girls divisions will be featured in the Jr. NBA Global Championship, separated into U.S. and international brackets that begin with round-robin play and continue with single-elimination competition. The winners of the U.S. and international brackets will play in the global championship games on August 11, 2019.

More than 300 boys and girls from 35 countries participated in the inaugural Jr. NBA Global Championship in August 2018.  During the weeklong event, all 32 teams participated in off-court activities including life skills sessions, Disney park visits, a community service project, and educational meetings with current and former NBA and WNBA players and coaches.

The Central girls from Kansas City, Missouri, USA defeated the Europe girls team 68-38 while the Central boys from Overland Park, Kansas, USA defeated the Africa and Middle East boys team 60-50 in the global championship games.
